Gardner Theatre

Welcome to Gardner Theatre

Gardner Theatre—conceptualized and brought to fruition in loving memory and honor of Eugene Herr Gardner, Sr.—opened in 2021, following three years of planning, fundraising, and construction.

The theater has played host to authors, graduations, orchestra rehearsals, Middle and Upper School morning meetings, the Lower School musical, and many more exciting events. With seating to accommodate the entire student body and the necessary fittings to host productions of unprecedented scale and grandeur, Gardner Theatre has opened up a new world of possibilities for LCDS.

The theater features a 35-seat orchestra pit and 580 seats across three levels, including a stadium-style second level and an upper mezzanine, as well as storage space for costumes and stage props.

Gardner Theatre offers state-of-the-art sound and lighting with a dedicated control booth, a lobby with concessions, backstage changing areas with restrooms, ADA compliant access for audience, entertainers, and theater tech support, and 2,700 square feet of stage space.

“…And Justice for All?”

What is justice?
There’s no doubt about it—justice has become a buzzword in the zeitgeist of modern America. At times, it’s a radicalizing and polarizing topic. In others, it’s a word that evokes pride and patriotism. In any regard, justice is a concept that long predates our country and culture; so, this year we’re going to explore the concept of justice (defined as “the quality of being fair and reasonable”). Additionally, we’ll be tackling its antithesis—injustice—and its instrument of implementation, systems of oppression.

Throughout the year, we’ll investigate religion, government, and law through our theatrical productions. We’re going to strive to hold a mirror up to ourselves; we’re going to be open to seeing what the mirror shows us; we’re going to challenge ourselves to seek justice in the community around us.

We’ll ask: Can a society be truly just? Where do we see systemic injustice in our global community? Can we recognize injustices in our own culture? How can we—as individuals—affect change to bring equity into the communities in which we live?

Join the LCDS Theatre Department on this important, year-long investigation of justice
